Actress Felisha Terrell has been cast as Red’s wife Guta in WGN America’s adaptation of Arkady and Boris Strugatsky’s classic SF novel Roadside Picnic.
This is the latest in a stream of casting news for the show. Terrell will join Mathew Goode (as Red), W. Earl Brown (as Buzzard) and Michael Lindall (as Tender).
Roadside Picnic depicts a world in which aliens have come and gone, leaving behind – in the location that they chose to briefly set down in (which has since become known as “the zone”) – mysterious properties and mysterious artefacts, worth risking life and limb to attain.
The Strugatsky Brothers were Russian SF writers who are often heralded as among the greatest SF writers who ever lived. Roadside Picnic is their best known work. It was also adapted by master director Andrei Tarkovsky in 1979 (Stalker).
Terrell is no stranger to television. She had a long stint in Teen Wolf as Kali, she was in one episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as a variety of other shows. She also holds a recurring role in the upcoming season of Starz’s Survivor’s Remorse. Her career has also taken her into film, including appearing in The Social Network as ‘beautiful woman’.
Terrell’s appearance shouldn’t be ignored. It is possible that the writers might have written the character of Guta as a beautiful woman to make it all the more difficult and foolhardy of Red when he decides to leave her and risk his life in the zone.
The character description for Guta details that she is a tough, street-wise woman, who never fell to the trappings of her beauty. She tries her best to normalise their family life in the complicated situation that they are dealt.
Being Teen Wolf fans, here at The Nerd Recites, we’re familiar with Terrell and her work. We are also big fans of The Strugasky Brothers’ Roadside Picnic and of Tarkovsky’s Stalker, so WGN adapting this classic means a lot to us and we can’t wait to see what they do with the source material.
